Analize log file please
« on: July 06, 2005, 10:16:18 AM »
Hello All,

Thanks for your help. I have read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial section at KRC. Below you will find my result.txt. I run 98SE on a 600mHz machine with 256K Ram. My major problem is Microsoft Excel causing error messges every time I open. The blue screen code is 017F:BFF9DFFF.

Hi LeicaM13,

I'm not seeing anything bad in that log. by any chance did this error start occurring after you dowloaded the Microsoft Update KB891711? It's been known to cause problems on some Windows98 and ME systems.

Click Start>Run and type in sfc. let it scan for any altered/corrupt files. You may need your Windows 98 Install disc so have it handy.

Also, let's do this:

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file.  This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN.  When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use CTRL C on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning.  We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.

Hi,

Even though that report looks 'busy'...those are all legit programs.  Did you try any of the other things I suggested? Is anything being found.?

Try disabling KB891711 from startup and see if you still get that error message:

Click Start>Run and type in msconfig. Click on Startup tab and look for KB891711 and uncheck the box. Click Apply and OK. If you're still getting the error message, go ahead and re-enable KB891711 in startup by following the same procedure above--simply 'check' the box and click 'Apply"

Run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ and save the results from the scan and post that here.

 C:\WINDOWS\Favorites\Health

Delete that folder.

It's time to run a few maintenance checks:

Please download Ad-aware at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and install it if you don't have it already.  Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it.  Also go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml to download the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants.  To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner.  Then click Run Tool and OK to start it.  If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean.  Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.  Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware at http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#adaware for better scan results.  Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D http://security.kolla.de/.  Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button.  Install any updates that are available.

Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'.  Next click on Immunize to your left.  Click the Immunize button (green cross) on top to Immunize your computer - you should do this each time there is an update.  Now go to Tools->Resident and make sure that TeaTimer is checked.  What this will do is monitor any system/registry changes and will ask you for permission to change any of these settings.

Now click on the 'Spybot-S&D' option on the top left to go back to the main screen.  Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button.  Let it run the scan.  If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the 'Fix Selected Problems' button.  Exit Spybot.  If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix http://majorgeeks.com/download4392.html and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CWShredder.sfx.exe and run it.  Uncompress the file and run it.  Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it.  Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK.  If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here.  Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

(if you all ready have the above, make sur eot update them and configure the settings as described above.)

Thank you for your assistance. I have completed all maintenence suggested. Removed an item found. I discovered from another source my specific problem with Excel crashing was caused by the .xlb file. Renaming it to .old fixed that SE98 bug.

We can close this thread.

Thanks again.

Thank you for the update--maybe someone else will have that particular problem and see this thread ;)

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent and use the free tools/programs provided.

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

More information and downloads are available at the following links:

Spyware Blaster
Spyware Guard
IE-Spyad

Perhaps I was a bit hasty in closing this thread. Yes, I fixed the Excel problem. However I continue to have low memory problems. I get repeated low memory messages with QuickBooks Pro. Also my attempt to run Adobe Photoshop resulted in an error message stating the Virtual Memory allocation is too low. A while back I changed the Virtual Memory to 15 megs. That worked at the time just fine. My HD is a 16 gig'er.

Could your RAM be faulty or corrupt?

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System.
On the panel that opens it will give you a brief description of your system specifications. How many MB or RAM does it say you have?

It could be that you are trying to run software that requires system specifications that your Win98 system does not meet.

Hi LeicaM13

First download Windows Memory Diagnostic to floppy or CD and boot to it.
This will check if memory is good.

Next, increase the size of virtual memory again. 15Mb is not very much. This will allow the hard drive to serve as memory, if the problem stops you will need to add more RAM.

256MB should be OK for 98 but with some programs , plus the O/S you may require more memory.
Most recomend 512MB min for todays systems.

I ran the memory diagnostic recommended above. No errors reported. I am going to run the spyware detection apps. suggested above again. In the mean time if you have another suggestion, please it on. By the way, how do you feel about PestPatrol? I have that loaded and it runs from startup. It also detects nothing.

Thanks,

Hi,

I use PestPatrol myself. I do like the program and actually don't mind paying for it. (It's the only one I do pay for :))  It has detected a lot of things in the past that AdAware and Spybot miss.

Did you disable KB891711 from running at startup...one of the problems it can cause is the hogging of system resources.

Norton is also a real system hog.  Try installing AVG ant-virus. You can download a free one at Grisoft http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php.  Install it and make sure to check for updates.

Uninstall Norton. See if this solves the problem.

Open up HijackThis and go to Config->Misc Tools and check the first two boxes there.  Now click on the 'Generate StartupList log' button.  Post that log here.

REM Notes:
REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows.  It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS.  The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in C:\
REM Please note that for MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys.  This driver won't be used by Windows 98
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 98 exits.
REM
REM - You MUST explicitly specify the CD ROM Drive Letter for MSCDEX.
REM - The string following the /D: statement must explicitly match
REM   the string in CONFIG.SYS following your CD-ROM device driver.

Here is something interesting that just happened which might shed some light on this problem. In attempting to open Quickbooks Pro (I am getting a lot of low memory messages with this program lately) I again got a low memory message but this time it told me my disc was full. The disc it said was full was my d drive which is my swap file. Like I said above, it only has 15 megs of Ram attributed to it. Does this mean my programs are opening to the d drive? Explorer indicates my Win386.swp at 14,336KB. I have no idea what this file is or if its important. The program icon attributed to it is the generic Microsoft flag.

Ok LeicaM13, since Kevin is still on vacation, I'm going to send you to www.techsupportforum.com. Let the experts in the Windows 98/ME section of the forum take a look at this problem. :)

Please be sure to tell them you've already posted an HJT log and have been declared clean.  State your problem exactly as you just stated it to me in your last post.
